Ok, it’s not officially summer yet, but it feels like it here in Licata, and we’re getting ready to cast off the lines and turn Serafina’s bow toward the north, towards islands in the sea. With the great good fortune of having Hannah on board, we’ll start the summer cruising season after a lovely winter here in Licata. Destinations will include the fairly small Mediterranean islands of Ustica and the Aeolian group, then on to larger ones like Elba Corsica and Sardinia.
Many of the other boaters are already gone from the marina here, our dear friends Morten and Anne-Inger leave for a summer in Norway tomorrow. Fortunately they, along with quite a few of the other boaters will be returning this coming winter. It was a great group this year, nicely integrated in the local community, and lots of fun to be around. Despite some initial fears when the marina operation was seized by the regional government for non-payment of fees on public land, the court appointed administration is doing just fine, and if anything, the marina is running more smoothly than ever, thanks in large part to Maria, Mara and the other dedicated employees.
The seasons here in southern Sicily have changed with lightning speed (and sometimes some real lightning!). April and May have been the scene of the two most important local festivals – of Easter and just this last week, the celebration of the town’s patron saint, Sant’Angelo. Lots of parades and music, and lots of focus on the strong Sicilian character of the town and the region.
For us, it has been interesting to watch the change in seasons pass through the produce stands. From the plethora of artichokes in January and February, to the appearance of greens and new red onions, to the end of the season of tarocco oranges, and the appearance of cantaloupes and small watermelons.
Being back on the boat will be a bit of culture shock after so many months of being deeply immersed in Licata’s very active community – but we’ll be back, and look forward to seeing our many friends again. Here are some random photos from the last couple of months.
And now it’s time to shake the dust out of those sails!
